The purpose of sharing the photos, drawings, links and posts below is to give visitors design tips/ideas for painting both salt dough ornaments and clay ornaments shaped with cookie molds and cookie cutters. I have collected many of these since the 1970s, so there is sure to be something that visitors also own a duplicate of, packed away in some forgotten drawer or cupboard. Initially this listing will be small, but will grow as I dig into my stash and post in 2023. If you are working with homemade Salt Dough, you will need to gather the following:
  • salt, all-purpose flour and water for the salt dough
  • acrylic or poster paints - lots of colors: red, green, blue, yellow, orange, purple, black, brown and white
  • acrylic sealer - these come in aerosol or liquid applications
  • zip lock bag  - to keep your clay moist until you are ready to cut, stamp or mold it
  • a variety of small paint brushes
  • a jar of water for cleaning your brushes while you work
  • vegetable cooking spray for stoneware molds and talcum powder for terracotta molds (These you will need to aid in the unmolding of salt dough.)
  • a selection of wire and ribbons for hanging
Salt Dough is especially easy to work with and very inexpensive to make. You can watch a video and copy a tried and true recipe for making salt clay at my graphic ministry website. I also include some of my own free patterns for alternative Jesse Tree Ornaments on that page as well. The link is below in the caption for the Jesse Tree Ornament Crafts.

Where to find more cookie molds or cookie cutters online: These suggestions are popular but there are many good folks who probably sell similar products in your hometown. Have fun collecting!

You may choose to craft with paper clay instead of salt clay. Paper clay is lighter weight and therefore, easier to hang on delicate pine or fir tree branches. But if your tree is artificial, the weight is of less importance and salt dough will suffice. Purchase paper clay from a hobby store or mix your own for similar projects. Below I have listed some excellent youtube channels that share with their visitors homemade paper clay recipes:
